Arlen “AJ” J. Leonard, age 67, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Friday, April 24, 2026, at John Dempsey Hospital at UConn Health after a short and difficult battle with cancer and heart failure.
Born on May 16, 1958, in Pennsylvania, Arlen was the son of the late Arvile and Aileen (Book) Leonard. He graduated from high school in Fairport, New York, and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York. Arlen dedicated over 25 years of his career as a manager with Marshalls Department Store, traveling throughout the country to support various locations before ultimately retiring in Connecticut to be closer to his family.
He was the proud owner of a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W30 and a 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, both of which he showcased at every opportunity. His vehicles earned numerous trophies and awards, a source of immense pride. He enjoyed cruising in his cars on warm, sunny days to one of many car shows. AJ was an active member of several Connecticut car clubs and was instrumental in organizing and running car shows; including popular events held at the American Italian Civic Club that drew both car enthusiasts and the public.
A man of great integrity, Arlen believed in putting action behind his words and encouraged others to always do the same. He was known for his big personality and engaging conversation. Above all, he was deeply devoted to his family and treasured the time they spent together, especially during the holidays. He was a former member of the United Methodist Church in West Hartford and a member of the Waterbury Republican Town Committee.
